Dr. David Mingay worked for three years as a service fellow at the Center for Disease Control's National Center for Health Statistics. Dr. Mingay helped develop and test a wide variety of health questionnaires and conducted methodological research on improving the accuracy of respondents' answers. Following this, he worked for five years as a survey methodologist at the National Opinion Research Center at the University of Chicago. He developed and evaluated questionnaires on a wide variety of topics, including exercise, diet, medical history, and sexual behavior. In addition, he conducted research on questionnaire design issues, including how the order of questions and response categories affect answers, and methods to improve reporting of sensitive information.

Since 1994, he has been an assistant professor in the Department of Anesthesia and Critical Care at the University of Chicago Medical Center. Dr. Mingay has written questionnaires on such topics as herbal medicines, chronic pain, and satisfaction with treatment. He has also developed and evaluated a series of questionnaires, administered over the Internet and by touch-tone telephone, that comprehensively screen for medical and psychological problems in children and adults.

Recently, he has been researching methods to make questionnaires administered over the Internet user-friendlier. Dr. Mingay has published works extensively on many topics relating to questionnaire design. He is best known for his pioneering work on cognitive interviewing methodology. Research has shown that errors in responding to questionnaires are primarily the result of respondents misunderstanding the question, failing to recall relevant information, and using inappropriate cognitive strategies in arriving at their answers. Cognitive interviewing is the most effective procedure for identifying and resolving respondents' difficulties with questions, thereby greatly improving the accuracy of their answers. Dr. Mingay has a Ph.D. in cognitive psychology from the University of Cambridge, where he studied memory for everyday events.
